Working remotely means having the flexibility to work how and when you want - but it can be uninspiring to be surrounded by the same four walls every day. At Quay Commons we offer a laid-back, contemporary space that encourages both productivity and relaxation.

We have an array of table sizes allowing you to work through that to-do list autonomously or with others. Our huge central table is a great spot to get creative, meet with colleagues or make new friends.

With free, reliable wifi and accessible plug points throughout, we are a freelancer’s dream come true. Combined with our chilled vibe and superb coffee, your inspired-thinking will start flowing freely. Settle in for an hour, an afternoon or a day. You’re always welcome.

Did we mention coffee? We’ve recently partnered with specialist coffee roaster Machina Coffee. They’ve been serving coffee to Edinburgh Southsiders since 2016, and we’re super-proud to be the first cafe in Leith to use their amazing beans. The ultimate productivity boost. 

We’re also a bakery so there’s always something tempting to eat. You’ll spy our talented bakers quietly working in our open-plan kitchen to ensure our counter is laden with cakes, sandwiches, pastries and sweet treats all day long.

WE HAVE AN OPENING DATE!

We're very excited to announce that we'll be opening The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage on Saturday 24th November.

It’s our third venture and the first ever restaurant on Calton Hill. We promise you amazing food as well as breath-taking views across the Firth of Forth and the city skyline.
 
We can't wait to welcome you for breakfast, lunch and dinner surrounded by floor-to-ceiling views of Edinburgh and beyond. We'll be open 5 days a week, offering an approachable, relaxed dining experience. 
 
We’ll be serving a modern take on the food we have evolved over the last six years at The Gardener’s Cottage to complement The Lookout’s modern architecture, and of course, those spectacular views.

Watch the city wake up with our artisan breakfast buffet brimming with goodness from 10am.
 
Or join us for lunch or dinner when we'll be serving a seasonal and inventive a la carte, complemented by a prix fixe menu. 
 
Head over to our website to take a look at our sample menus, but you can expect to see dishes like Douglas Fir-cured sea trout with sauerkraut, seaweed and rye bread; Gigha halibut, butternut squash purée, golden sultanas and brioche and clam vinaigrette; lobster smoked over oak with seaweed butter; Tweed Valley mallard roasted on the crown; and spiced pumpkin and chocolate tart, star anise and molasses ice-cream with pear, honey and walnut crumble.

The Lookout by Gardener’s Cottage is a partnership with Collective, the organisation currently re-developing the City Observatory site on Calton Hill into a new home for contemporary art. As well as the purpose-built restaurant, the world-class development incorporates the restored City Observatory and City Dome, along with new purpose-built exhibition space The Hillside.

Opened last summer by Dale Mailley of The Gardener’s Cottage, we operate the same philosophy to use the best ingredients and take care to make sure everything we serve is the best it can possibly be. 

Our baristas take great pride in their work and are passionate about coffee.

Our New Restaurant!

We're so excited to reveal the name and location of our new restaurant.

Situated at the top of Calton Hill, we're opening The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage in partnership with Collective, the organisation currently re-developing the City Observatory site into a new home for contemporary art.

Built on a cantilever so the restaurant is partially suspended over Calton Hill’s northwest slope, The Lookout by Gardener’s Cottage will feature floor to ceiling glass windows and promises panoramic views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth. 
 
We don't have an opening date yet - but will announce as soon as do.

Our opening hours in August are changing! We're opening later to make the most of the summer nights. Our terrace and beer garden are open all day.

Monday - Wednesday: 8AM - 7PM

Thursday - Saturday  9AM – 9PM

Sunday: 10AM - 7PM

BURGER FRIDAYS

Every Friday night throughout the summer (weather permitting!) we're serving our fabulous burgers FREE between 4-6pm in the beer garden.

Handmade in our kitchen butchery from pig and lamb sourced from Grierson Organic, they're at their juiciest best when cooked on the barbecue grill by our chefs.

No need to book, just turn up. If it's not BBQ weather, we'll be serving our evening menu inside until 9.00pm. See Sundown Menu above.

BBQ AND LIVE MUSIC THIS SATURDAY

Join us on Saturday 14 July for a BBQ and live music from Chris Finn in our beer pen, starting at 3pm.

We're busy building an outdoor bar and can't wait to start pouring Six Degrees Northand Cross Borders Brewing Company beers from our taps. We'll also have top-notch G'n'Ts made with Secret Herb Garden gins and lots wonderful wines to choose from by the glass (or bottle!).

Our terrace is open from 9am (from 10am on Sunday too) for breakfast, brunch and lunch. There's so much deliciousness to choose from: fresh croissants, pastries and cakes from our bakery, superb sourdough sandwiches, seasonal salads and soups, egg-based brunch dishes and the best coffee from our neighbours Williams and Johnson. You could stay all day!
